Two cats out today. Yesterday’s snow quality remained stellar, and the bluebird skies enhanced the experience. Beuford, our photographer, had great conditions to work with for his ski photography. As you know, we take hundreds of photos of our guests, guides, cats, and scenic landscapes as part of our effort to “tell the story” each and every day. Our ski photography has become a great tool on a daily basis to show you exactly what the conditions are like. Every day we create a daily “best of slideshow” which we then post to our website in order to give everybody a visual taste of a day with Steamboat Powdercats.

Level 1 Avalanche Course


Level 1 Avalanche Course

Once again our AIARE Level I Avalanche Course was a success! Students from Steamboat, the front range and across the country joined us for three days of education and fun. Our Level 1 consists of a day in class learning the basics of avalanche formation, terrain and decision-making. Then it’s out to the field for companion rescue skills, travel and snow observations.

While we are waiting for the big snow’s to arrive for our season, we are offering daily lunch and dinner Scenic Snowcat Tours. This tour does not include skiing or snowboarding within the terrain.

Our scenic snowcat tour is designed for those guests who wish to take a comfortable ride into the Routt National Forest in one of our luxury snowcats and have either lunch or dinner at our cozy, mid-mountain cabin. It is perfect for families, groups and individuals who wish to see a part of Steamboat that they may never see.

Avalanche 1


Avalanche 1

This weekend, we are hosting students for an AIARE (The American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education) Level I avalanche course. We will also be offering another AIARE Avalanche 1 course the following weekend (Jan 13-15).
Yes, even though we have a very limited snowpack and have yet to guide in the terrain, there is still enough coverage to teach this course. As usual we are excited to provide quality backcountry education.
