Each season has its perks. The summer has longer days as well as the warmer days so many people spend their time sitting on a beach, swimming, hiking, running, or playing out door sports. Winter on the other hand is very cold and will force many to stay indoors. So what can you do in the winter time to keep yourself active, and enjoy yourself now that the cold has arrived.
There are many activities that one can do in the winter. There are the classic activities that everyone has participated in at some point in their life such as making snowmen, snow forts, snow angels, and snowball wars. In fact some of the best family bonding experiences are in the wintertime when the whole family gets together to create the perfect snowman.
If you know of a hill that has been recently plastered with snow, you can get some friends together and go sleigh riding. Be careful though when choosing where to sleigh. Make sure that at the bottom of the hill there are no trees or waterholes as both could be hazards. If you steer wrong and hit a tree you could seriously injure yourself. If there is a frozen over pond at the bottom you could possibly break the ice and fall in. Once you have made sure there are no hazards you can start sleighing. Get creative, create a small jump at the bottom of the hill so when you have reached optimum speed you can go airborne or even create a snow wall that you can bust through.
There is also skiing, which is one of the most popular things to do in the cold months. Most ski resorts offer rental equipment so you will not have to purchase your own, but if you plan to ski a lot during the winter, it is suggested that you buy your own equipment as it will be cheaper in the long run. Resorts also offer beginner and advanced courses. Stick to the beginner course until you are comfortable with the skis that you have and then move on to the more advanced courses. Most resorts now also offer rentals on snow boards for those of us who desire more extreme sports.
For the nature lover and hiker in you there is cross country skiing. There are resorts that offer this as well as some basic tour companies. I suggest that you get a tour guide to go with you even if you know the area that you plan to trek. Guides are trained in CPR and other rescue techniques should there be a problem. They are also trained to recognize and avoid the possible hazards in the area that you are skiing in.
For those of you who ride an ATV or go off-roading during the summer months fear not there is a solution for you as well. Snow mobiles allow one to trek the wintry wonderland fairly easy, and at variable speeds. Speeding over the snow, and trekking through the snow white forest can be exciting but dangerous as well. As with any sport, especially motor sports, you need to consider your safety. Be sure to wear safety gear such as helmets and pads, gas up your snowmobile so you do not get stranded, and bring a flare gun incase you encounter any problems along the way. It is again suggested that you find a guide to go with you as they can not only help avoid, but assist in any problems that you encounter. If you are insistent on not having a guide be sure to map out the area that you are riding, and be sure to avoid any iced over water as the weight of the snowmobile and you combined may crack and break the ice.
The winter also gives you an excuse to stay in and watch a movie with that special person. Imagine sitting on a comfortable couch near a fire place, looking out over the large beautiful waterscape that has been created by the snow.
There are many other activities that you can partake in during the winter season such as snow shoeing, hockey, and ice skating. What you can do in the winter is limited only by your imagination. After those long hard exciting days out in the snow, skiing, playing, snowmobiling, and creating there is nothing like a hot cup of coco in front of a fireplace. So when you are considering a vacation for the family this year, consider taking it in the winter instead of the summer and explore the many opportunities that the winter offers.
