some real estate in Steamboat from Pete. Pete Wither's grandfather came to Steamboat
in the late 1800's in a covered wagon. Pete's father Bob was born
in Steamboat and, at age 11, Bob jumped the 90-meter jump at Howelsen
Hill, and was known as the "boy wonder". Pete also grew
up in Steamboat and started skiing in 1945, beginning a love affair,
which continues today. Pete has worked in the ski industry since
1961. His wealth of experience extends from working as a slope groomer
before there were snowcats, pulling a 1/2 ton roller with skis and
a blade down the slopes to knock down moguls, to representing the
United States ski industry in international conventions. Pete was
involved with avalanche control in it's infancy, developed the accident
investigation format that all ski areas use today, and was involved
in the first gondola evacuation in the United States. As Steamboat's
Professional Ski Patrol Director since 1982, Pete is a member of
the National Ski Patrol's Ski Safety Team, as well as the National
Advisor of all Certified Patrollers. His other love, besides his
wife Barbi, a Ski School Supervisor, is mountain biking. He designed
and developed the Mt. Bike program and trail system at the Steamboat
Ski Area. Claim to Fame
Pete entered his first race in 1948 and continues to race today.
Additionally he is probably the most beautiful technical skier you
will ever ski with.
