Never Summer – Steamboat Powdercats
Let the equipment experts from Never Summer and the backcountry pros from Powdercats show you how to travel efficiently on your snowboard. Unlike other programs, we’ll use a snowcat to “bump” you up into the terrain for your first ascent and travel from there.
This experience is designed for advanced snowboarders who are ready to venture beyond the chairlifts. These riders are confident on ungroomed terrain, and are physically fit to hike uphill for up to an hour with a rigged day pack.
This is a great class to prepare for an AIARE Level 1 Avalanche Course, to get dialed in on using your splitboard and learning the basics of uphill travel on your splitboard.
- How to plan, pack, prepare, and head into the backcountry
- How to use your splitboard gear
- How to travel uphill and set a skin track
- Transitioning from hike-to-ride mode
- Basic route finding, and how to read terrain as a snowboarder
- Techniques for riding variable backcountry conditions

You’ll need to provide your own splitboard, climbing skins, day pack and water. Never Summer has some splitboards for us to use on a first come first serve basis. Let us know at time of booking if you need a board. If boards are unavailable, then will key you into who to rent these boards from. Avalanche gear (beacon, shovel, probes) is available to rent from SPC but like your splitboard, if you have your own then bring it as its best to practice with your own gear. Full gear list will be provided once deposits are made.
