It’s snowing in Steamboat

As of Saturday, October 6th, 2018, we have been getting regular snow as a cold front has moved in with good moisture, dumping snow all the way down into Steamboat Springs. On Saturday we saw our first snow of the season. This mean our annual Powder Prediction Contest is now over. Thank you to the hundred+ people who joined in the fun. The official report on Saturday, October 6th was a 1/2 inch at the Gondola on Steamboat. The winner of this years contest is Rita who predicted 3/4″ of snow on the 6th. She wins a free day with SPC this winter.

Now that temperatures are cooling off in the Yampa Valley and we tip toward Fall, it is really starting to feel like FACE SHOTS and FRESHIES are coming. Soon enough, our Aspen, Oak and Cottonwood trees will all have changed to red, orange and yellow, daily frost will appear in the mornings and then WHAM a cold front will move in and drop the season’s first layer of white gold.

Not sure how prepared we are for this first storm as this time of year in NW Colorado is AMAZING! But, it’s coming, we can’t stop it and we love it.

In preparation, it’s now time for you to remember about our annual POWDER PREDICTION CONTEST. You have the opportunity to win a free day of snowcat skiing and riding with us for this coming season. Rules to this contest are listed below. Please make sure you email us at least 96-hours (4 days) before the first snow with your predicted date and snow amount (to nearest 1/4 inch). Good luck!

Email us info@steamboatpowdercats.com

Predictions must have a date and a snow total (1/4 inch increments) associated with the date. Please make sure you have a snow total on this email as this is equally important as the date. For example, an appropriate prediction would be “3-inches on September 24th″.

Only 1 prediction per person is allowed.

The date and snow total that we will use for this contest is from the morning of the report taken. We will use the Steamboat Ski Area’s 5 a.m. snow report as the official date and snow total. Please understand, if the snow starts falling in the evening of August 29th for example, the date of the first official snowfall will be August 30th, not the 29th.

Prediction emails must be received in our email inbox at least 4 days or 96 hrs prior to the official 5 a.m. snow report of that first storm.

If the ski area does not put out a 5 a.m. phone message for this report, we will contact the ski area directly and find out what their estimated overnight snowfall was.

We will use the mid-mountain snow total. If there is no snow at the mid-mountain on this first storm, then we will use the snow total from the summit.

Your snow total must be done in inches. You can use up to a 1/4 inch increment to be exact. You cannot use “trace” as your prediction.

If multiple people guess the correct date and snow total, we will have a follow up contest to determine the winner. This follow up contest will be the depth of snow at our mid-mountain cabin on Buffalo Pass for the day we start our operation for this year. Whomever picks the closest amount on our opening day then wins this contest.

Thanks for all you do. Be safe and have a blast.
